Top Tips to Prevent Diabetes

With all the talk about diabetes in recent years, we thought it's a good time to help people understand a little more about how it happens and who is at risk.

Type 2 diabetes doesn't happen overnight, it's the result of a slow process of 'wearing out' the insulin producing cells in the pancreas, and unfortunately there are a number of factors that you can't do a great deal about:

  • having a family history of the disease
  • being over 55years of age - risk increases with the years
  • being an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander
  • being a woman who has given birth to a baby larger than 4.5kg (or had diabetes in pregnancy)

But Dr Kris Park, an Endocrinologist at Nepean Hospital, shares her common sense approach to the lifestyle factors that you CAN change. She says:

  • maintain a routine - your body loves routine
  • watch your waistline - aim for a pear shape rather than an apple
  • have a healthy relationship with food and aim for 30 minutes of exercise each day
  • manage your stress (we all have it, but it's how we handle it that makes the difference)
  • visit your GP for a check up at least once each year

Why not take the quiz from Diabetes Australia to see how your risks measure up.
