Managing the Medication Minefield

Pills potions and positive living.

Growing older often means increasing the array of medications that your body needs in order to feel good, stay healthy and well. We are lucky to live in a time where medicine has so many more options to manage our aches and pains, control or blood pressure, look after our heart, improve our circulation…, and that’s before we even think about supplements or vitamins.

Juggling when and how to take you medications can be a little stressful at times, because each tablet will have its own unique rules. For example ‘take half an hour before meals’ , ‘take 2 tabs with food’ , or ‘take on a full stomach’ … it can be confusing to say the least. But it doesn’t need to be too hard and Dr Fisher explains that there are a few key things to remember.

  • Check with your Dr whether still you NEED the medications that you’ve been taking for years.
  • Be honest with your Dr about any other tablets / supplements that you are taking.
  • Be sure you understand why you need the medication, how long you need to take it, and how and when you take it.
  • If you are worried you will forget the answers, take someone along to your appointment with you, an extra pair of ears is always good.
  • Always ask questions, if Dr is busy talk to your local pharmacist to help you understand.
  • Ask your Pharmacist about packaging your medications for you in a blister pack. This makes it easy to keep track of what you have or haven’t taken.
  • Never share your medications with friends.

While it can seem a little daunting, it doesn’t need to be, your Dr has your best interest at heart and will be happy to make life a little easier for you – you just need to ask.
