Man-Up...and talk about it

With the recent spotlight on the mental health of drought affected farmers, it's a good time to check in with ALL the men the men in our lives and encourage them to talk...

  • to each other
  • to their partner
  • to their GP

Depression and anxiety amongst men is often hidden. It can sometimes look like anger, mood swings, disinterest or simply losing the fun in life...all of which can be glossed over and attributed to study, work or family stress.  But according to data from the Australian Institute of Health and Wellbeing suicide rates amongst men are 4 times higher than those of women, and that death by suicide has reached a 10 year peak. If that's not enough ... here are a couple more sobering figures:

  • in Australia, a man dies by suicide every 4 hours.
  • in the next 17 days, across the country 100 men will take their own life.

Gradually, awareness of depression amongst men is rising, and there are some great services out there that are specifically designed for blokes.  For example, Beyond Blue has a checklist as well as some tips if you're not quite ready to 'go public'  - and the Mental Health Navigation Tool on our resources page will help to locate the right kind of local support here in Penrith, Hawkesbury, Blue Mountains and Lithgow areas.

So perhaps it's time to "Man-Up...and talk about it"
